Bioware is focusing heavily on developing combat in Mass Effect 3, according to a recent interview.

Senior designer Christina Norman told Official Xbox Magazine that RPG elements will influence the combat parts of the game more directly than before.

"We want to enrich the role-playing aspects of the game, while making sure that they're always meaningful in combat," she said.

"We don't want to have any meaningless behind-the-scenes stat games, where the output is very minor in combat. Every single thing you do has a real impact in the battle."

Norman also reassured that the combat will be familiar to fans of Mass Effect 2, though added: "There are so many subtle improvements that you'll miss them if you go back."

It was previously revealed that Mass Effect 3 will have expanded skill trees and evolving powers.

Mass Effect 3 will release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in early 2012.
